On Friday, April 18th, 2008, an earthquake with an estimated moment magintude of 5.2 occurred in the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone in southeastern Illinois. A series of aftershocks, including one with an estimated moment magnitude of 4.6, followed the mainshock.
Although the earthquakes occurred 400 miles from the nearest station in the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory's seismic network, they were of sufficient size to be well-recorded in Virginia.
