EARTHQUAKES: JANUARY THROUGH JUNE 1988 There were 91 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 3.5) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during the first six months of 1988. Of those, three in Tennessee (9 January at 00:16, MDB= 2.9; 9 January at 01:07, MDB= 3.2, MMI= IV; 16 February, mb(Lg)= 3.3, MDB= 3.3, MMI= IV), two in South Carolina (23 January, MDL= 3.3, MMI= V; 17 February, mb(Lg)= 2.5, MDL= 2.4), and one in North Carolina (18 February, mb(Lg)= 3.5, MDB= 3.3, MMI= IV) were felt. Southeastern Tennessee continues to have the highest level of seismic activity within the region. Earthquakes reported include 4 in Alabama, 9 in Georgia, 1 in Kentucky, 3 in North Carolina, 9 in South Carolina, 64 in Tennessee, and 1 in Virginia. The average rate of 15 M ge 0.0 shocks, per month for this report period is 2.5 times the 11 year rate of six per month. However, this may be a result of the relative completeness of reporting for this six month period versus the entire 11 year history of the SEUSSN catalog. For example, the average rate of M ge 2.5 shocks (1.2 per month) for this report period is identical to the 11 year rate. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of tectonic events (M ge 0) located within the region during the report period. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 11 year period from July 1977 through June 1988 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 22). The SEUSSN earthquake statistics section includes general catalog statistics (page 7), focal depth distribution plots (page 8), magnitude distribution plots (page 9), estimates of catalog completeness (page 9), and a magnitude recurrence relation (page 10). The largest earthquake for the report period was an mb(Lg)= 3.5 event (18 February) that was felt (epicentral MMI= IV) in North Carolina. Other events of interest were the earthquake of 9 January at 01:07 (MMI= IV, felt in North Carolina and Tennessee) that was preceded by five foreshocks (one felt) and was followed by four aftershocks all within a 24-hour period. Additionally, the Bristol, Tennessee/Virginia, earthquake of 16 February was followed by two aftershocks. There were five reservoir related earthquakes (0.0 le M le 2.0) during the first six months of 1988, none of which was felt. Appendix D contains excerpts from Shedlock (1987). Shedlock provides relocations and focal mechanisms for 74 earthquakes (for 1924-1986) in the South Carolina area. Appendix E contains excerpts from Chapman et al. (1988). The Appendix includes the abstract from the paper and the calibration curve for digital recordings of the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory seismic network. The SEUSSN monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 deg N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 degrees West (see outlined area in the SEUSSN stations map).
