EARTHQUAKES: JANUARY THROUGH DECEMBER 1989 There were 110 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 3.9) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during 1989. Ten of those, one in Alabama (20 August 00:03, mb(Lg)= 3.9, MD= 3.5, MMI= VI), one in Kentucky (15 July 00:08, mb(Lg)= 3.1, MD= 3.3, MMI= V), four in South Carolina (2 January 16:35, MD= 2.6, MMI= III; 4 January 09:39, MD= 2.8, MMI= III; 3 May 01:39, MD= 1.4; 2 June 05:04, MD= 2.0, MMI= IV), three in Tennessee (19 January 11:38, MD= 1.8, MMI= II; 20 August 22:54, MD= 2.0; and 2 December 13:31, mb(Lg)= 2.9, MD= 3.0), and one in Virginia (4 June 09:49, mb(Lg)= 2.8, MD= 2.5, MMI= III) were felt. Southeastern Tennessee continues to report the greatest number of earthquakes within the region. Earthquakes reported include 10 in Alabama, 5 in Georgia, 5 in Kentucky, 9 in North Carolina, 14 in South Carolina, 63 in Tennessee, 3 in Virginia, and 1 in West Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of tectonic earthquakes (M ge 0) located within the region during the report period. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 12.5 year period from July 1977 through December 1989 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 24). The SEUSSN earthquake statistics section includes general catalog statistics (page 7), focal depth distribution plots (page 8), magnitude distribution plots (page 9), estimates of catalog completeness (page 9), a magnitude recurrence relation (page 10), and cumulative strain factor history plots (page 11). This Bulletin includes a substantial number of events listed in the Addenda (Appendix B) that were not originally reported in Bulletin 23. The largest earthquake for the report period was an mb(Lg)= 3.9 event (20 August 00:03) that caused minor damage (epicentral MMI= VI) in Florance, Alabama. The event was felt over northwest Alabama and south central Tennessee. The total number of stations operating during 1989 (125) is virtually unchanged from 1988 and does not yet reflect the network attrition currently taking place in the region. There were three earthquakes associated with the Lake Sinclair Reservoir in Georgia and one reservoir related event in South Carolina reported for 1989. The SEUSSN monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 deg N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 degrees West (see outlined area in the SEUSSN stations map).
