Estimates of Completeness for the Southeastern United States. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 9 SEISMICITY OF THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES DURING 1994 There were 58 earthquakes (0.0 ¾ M ¾ 3.6) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during 1994. Of those, 10 had felt reports. Earthquakes reported included 6 in Alabama (1 felt; 4 May 09:12, mb(Lg)= 3.0, MD= 3.3, MMI= IV), 1 in Delaware (23 April 09:09, MD= 2.0, MMI= felt), 6 in Georgia (1 felt; 5 April 22:21, mb(Lg)= 3.2, MD= 3.4, MMI= V), 1 in Maryland (28 October 02:04, MD= 2.7, MMI= felt), 1 in North Carolina (6 August 19:54, mb(Lg)= 3.6, MD= 3.8, MMI= V), 17 in South Carolina (4 felt; largest was 29 January 09:54, MD= 2.9, MMI= II), 21 in Tennessee (1 felt; largest was 16 April 20:10, MD= 1.5, MMI= V), 3 in Virginia, and 2 in West Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of tectonic earthquakes (M „ 0) located within the region during the report period. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 17.5 year period from July 1977 through December 1994 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 29). SEUSSN EARTHQUAKE CATALOG STATISTICS includes report period and cumulative earthquake catalog statistics, focal depth distribution plots, magnitude distribution plots, estimates of catalog completeness, a magnitude recurrence relation, cumulative strain factor history plots, and an epicenter density contour map. SOUTHEASTERN U.S. EARTHQUAKES DURING 1994 lists hypocentral parameters, magnitudes, and arrival times for tectonic earthquakes (i.e., not reservoir related) in the southeastern United States. The largest earthquake for the report period was an mb(Lg)= 3.6 event (6 August 19:54) that was felt over an area of 24,000 square kilometers with the highest intensities of V being reported from the towns of New Bern and Washington, North Carolina. Appendix A includes an abstract from the 1994 Eastern Section, Seismological Society of America Meeting in Columbia, South Carolina, that discusses this event. SOUTHEASTERN U.S. RESERVOIR ACTIVITY DURING 1994 lists hypocentral parameters for 15 earthquakes near the Monticello and Keowee Reservoirs in South Carolina. The Keowee Reservoir earthquake of 9 August at 04:12 was felt locally. SEISMIC STATION LISTING AND NETWORK MAPS contains a listing of seismic stations operating during the report period and maps showing the major network operators in the region. The number of stations operating during 1994 was 104. The SEUSSN monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 deg N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 degrees West (see Figure 10). ACCESSING WAVEFORM DATA AND OTHER INFORMATION AT THE VIRGINIA TECH SEISMOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY describes how to access, by the computer Internet, digital waveforms, earthquake catalogs, and other data from the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory. Software is now available to convert network triggered waveform files in the SUDS format to the SAC format. DEFINITIONS AND NETWORK OPERATOR CODES contains definitions of various terms and abbreviations used in the Bulletin as well as a listing of codes for network operators and/or contributors. APPENDIX A includes an abstract on the 6 August, New Bern, North Carolina, earthquake listed above. APPENDIX B from the Tennessee Valley Authority contains locations and magnitudes for the last three months of 1989 and all of 1990. APPENDIX C lists changes and corrections to earthquakes listed in previous SEUSSN Bulletins.
