ACCESSING EVENT WAVEFORM DATA FILES FROM THE VIRGINIA TECH SEISMIC OBSERVATORY OVERVIEW Following is a discussion on accsessing digital waveform data files recorded by the Virginia Tech Seismic Observatory (VTSO). The files in subdirectory /events/ include the following: 1996events.lis 1997events.lis 1998events.lis 1999events.lis 2000events.lis 2001events.lis These files list the events for which waveform data are accessible. Below is an example: 1999events.lis WAVEFORM DATA ACCESSIBLE IN Subdirectory 99 file net remarks 992290013 E N=0 Turkey M=7.3, Aug 17, 1999 992631600 E N=0 Taiwan, sept 20, 1999 992731635 E N=0 Mexico, Sept. 30, 1999 Ms=7.5 992890948 E N=0 Hector Mine, California, oct. 16, 1999 992940819 E N=0 New Madrid seismic zone, mblg 3.9, oct 21, 1999 993161657 E N=0 Turkey M=7.1, Nov. 12, 1999 993260031 E N=0 Wythe Co., Va, MD=1.5, Nov. 22, 1999 993351926 E N=0 South of Cayman Islands, mb=6.3, Dec. 1, 1999 Under file is the time of the event, in format YRdayhrmin. For example, 992290013 indicates 1999, day number 229, 00HR 13min UTC. This time is used as the directory name containing the waveform data for the respective events. For example, the waveform data for the Wythe Co. Va earthquake that occurred on Nov. 22, 1999 is in subdirectory 99/993260031. The data for events subsequent to 1997 are written in SAC format. Instrument response files as well as other information such as Hypoellipse output files may also be found in the waveform subdirectory.
